Mark 1:17 (KJV):
“And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.”
✨ Unpacking the Verse
“Come ye after me”
-
This is an invitation and a command at the same time.
-
Jesus calls not for admiration from afar but for personal following.
-
Discipleship means walking where He walks, learning His ways, and living under His authority.
📖 Matthew 11:28–29 – “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”
👉 Meaning: Following Jesus begins with a step of trust and surrender.
“And I will make you”
-
Discipleship is not self-made. Jesus Himself shapes, molds, and transforms His followers.
-
It is a process (“I will make”) — transformation doesn’t happen in one moment but as we walk with Him.
📖 Philippians 1:6 – “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.”
👉 Meaning: We don’t perfect ourselves; Jesus does the work in us.
“To become fishers of men”
-
From ordinary fishermen, He gives them a new mission — to win souls.
-
Fishing here symbolizes gathering people into the kingdom of God.
-
Jesus takes their natural skills and re-purposes them for eternal impact.
📖 Proverbs 11:30 – “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.”
📖 Matthew 28:19 – “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.”
👉 Meaning: To follow Jesus is to be sent on mission — our lives become a net that draws people to Him.
🙏 Reflective Prayer from Mark 1:17
Abba Father, in the name of Jesus,
I thank You for the call of my Savior, who says, “Come after Me.” Lord Jesus, I hear Your voice, and I desire to follow You wholeheartedly. Teach me to walk in Your steps, to learn from Your heart, and to obey Your will above all else.
You promised, “I will make you.” I cannot shape myself, but I yield to Your hands. Mold me into the vessel You desire. Remove what does not honor You, and fill me with Your Spirit until my life reflects Your glory.
Lord, You said, “I will make you to become fishers of men.” Send me out to touch lives with Your love. Let me cast the net of the gospel with wisdom and compassion. Make my words and actions shine so that many may come to know You, the only true Savior.
May my life be a testimony of Your grace, and may I never lose sight of the mission to bring souls into Your kingdom.
In Jesus Almighty name, Amen.
