Living by the Word

"By Every Word That Proceeds from God"

Matthew 4:4 (KJV)“It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”

🌿 Devotion:

Jesus, hungry after forty days of fasting, was confronted by Satan with a seemingly reasonable suggestion: “If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.” But Jesus did not respond with logic or physical need—He responded with the Word of God.

He quoted from Deuteronomy 8:3, reminding us that physical needs, though real and pressing, are not life’s ultimate sustenance. Our true survival, strength, and direction come not from what we eat—but from what God says.

In this moment, Jesus demonstrated the priority of spiritual obedience over physical comfort. He showed that God's Word has supreme authority and life-giving power—even more than food.

This verse invites us to ask ourselves:

  • Are we feeding daily on God's Word?

  • Do we depend on His truth like we depend on our next meal?

  • When temptation comes, do we fight back with Scripture like Jesus did?

🕊️ Reflection Questions:

  1. What role does the Word of God play in your daily life?

  2. How do you respond when your physical desires clash with spiritual discipline?

  3. In what areas of your life is God calling you to depend more on His Word?

🙏 Prayer:

Abba Father, in the name of Jesus,
Thank You for Your living Word that sustains my soul. Teach me to hunger for You more than for the things of this world. Let Your Word be my strength in times of weakness, my light in times of darkness, and my defense in moments of temptation. May I learn to live not by bread alone, but by every word You speak.

In Jesus Almighty name, Amen.
