“Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness.” – Matthew 3:15
The very first recorded words of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew carry a profound message: obedience to God’s will.
At this moment, Jesus approaches John the Baptist to be baptized—a surprising act, considering John’s baptism was one of repentance, and Jesus had no sin to repent of. John himself hesitates, recognizing the holiness of Jesus, and says, “I have need to be baptized of thee.” But Jesus responds gently and purposefully: “Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness.”
This simple yet powerful statement reveals three key truths:
1. Jesus’ Humility and Submission
Jesus, the sinless Son of God, humbled Himself to undergo a baptism meant for sinners. Not because He needed cleansing, but because He was identifying fully with humanity. He stepped into our place—not above us, but beside us.
2. The Importance of Obedience
“To fulfil all righteousness” means doing everything that is right in God’s eyes. Jesus’ baptism was an act of obedience—setting a perfect example of submitting to God’s plan, even when it didn’t appear necessary from a human perspective.
3. The Beginning of His Ministry
This moment marks the transition from Jesus’ private life to His public ministry. His baptism symbolized a commissioning—He was now stepping into His role as the Savior, and Heaven responded immediately with the Father’s voice and the Holy Spirit descending like a dove (v.16–17).
Reflection
Jesus did not begin His earthly ministry with a sermon or a miracle, but with an act of obedience. His first words remind us that true righteousness begins with a willing heart that says, “Yes” to the will of God, even when it doesn’t seem necessary or logical.
Prayer
Abba Father, in the name of Jesus,
Thank You for sending Your Son to walk among us in humility and obedience. As Jesus submitted to baptism to fulfill all righteousness, teach us to obey You even when we do not fully understand. Help us to follow His example—not just in word but in action. Let our lives reflect the same surrender that marked the beginning of His ministry.
In Jesus Almighty name, Amen.
