Standing Firm as You Walk with God

Holding Fast to Christ and Growing in Faith

Walking with God is a daily journey of faith. There are seasons when our hearts are full of joy and His presence seems near. There are also seasons when prayers appear unanswered, trials continue, and obedience becomes costly.

Through every season, Scripture calls us to stand firm—to remain rooted in Christ and continue trusting His Word.

“As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:

Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.”

— Colossians 2:6–7

We begin by receiving Christ, and we continue by walking in Him. Our strength rests in the One who saves us, sustains us, and teaches us to follow Him.

Keep building on the foundation

Hebrews 6 begins with a call to spiritual growth:

“Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection…”

— Hebrews 6:1

“Perfection” here speaks of maturity. The writer urges believers to build upon the foundation they have received. A foundation is essential, but a building must rise upon it.

Likewise, knowing the truth should lead us into living by the truth. As we grow, we learn to obey God when it is difficult, forgive when we have been wounded, and trust Him when we cannot see the outcome.

Standing firm includes moving forward in obedience.

Guard your heart against becoming hardened

One danger in our walk is the gradual hardening of the heart.

We may hear God’s Word yet repeatedly delay our response. We may hold on to resentment, excuse a sinful habit, or allow disappointment to weaken our willingness to trust Him.

Scripture therefore tells us:

“But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.”

— Hebrews 3:13

Sin deceives. It can make disobedience appear reasonable and repentance seem unnecessary.

We need hearts that remain teachable before God. When His Word exposes something within us, we should receive His correction humbly. His correction is an expression of His fatherly care.

A tender heart does not mean we never struggle. It means we remain willing to listen and respond.

Take the warning about turning away seriously

Hebrews 6:4–6 gives a solemn warning about falling away after receiving spiritual light and experiencing the blessings of the gospel. It describes those who:

“Crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.”

— Hebrews 6:6

The One being put to shame is Jesus. Through their rejection, they publicly dishonour the Son of God and align themselves with those who rejected Him.

Christians understand some details of this passage differently, but its seriousness is unmistakable. We must never treat Christ, His sacrifice, or His Word as something of little value.

At the same time, this warning should not be used to tell a repentant believer that every failure has placed them beyond God’s mercy. A struggle with sin, followed by confession and a desire to return, must be distinguished from a settled rejection of Christ.

The proper response to the warning is to draw near to Jesus, receive His Word, and continue in faith.

When you stumble, return to Him

Standing firm does not mean pretending that we are strong or hiding our failures.

Peter confidently declared his loyalty to Jesus, yet later denied knowing Him. When he recognised what he had done, he wept bitterly. His failure was grievous, but the Lord restored him and called him to serve again.

When we sin, we must take responsibility and come honestly before God.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

— 1 John 1:9

Do not allow shame to keep you away from the One who calls you to repentance. Confess what is wrong, receive His forgiveness, and take the steps of obedience that repentance requires.

Our confidence rests in His faithfulness, even as we take seriously our responsibility to follow Him.

Stand in the strength God supplies

There are battles we cannot overcome through determination alone.

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.”

— Ephesians 6:10

God calls us to depend upon Him. We strengthen our walk through prayer, attention to Scripture, fellowship with other believers, and practical obedience.

Sometimes standing firm means refusing a temptation. Sometimes it means forgiving someone again. Sometimes it means asking a trusted believer to pray with us. Sometimes it means continuing to do what is right while waiting patiently for God.

These ordinary acts of faith matter. Through them, we learn to remain faithful in the circumstances before us.

Hold fast to your hope

Hebrews gives us both warning and encouragement:

“Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)”

— Hebrews 10:23

We hold fast because God is faithful. His character gives us reason to trust Him when our feelings change and our circumstances are difficult.

Examine your heart, but keep looking to Christ. Receive correction, and continue in hope. Seek help when you are weary, and encourage others who are struggling.

Standing firm as you walk with God means continuing to trust Jesus, remaining responsive to His Word, and taking the next step of obedience by His grace.

A Prayer

Abba Father, in the name of Jesus, thank You for calling me to walk with You. Thank You for Your faithfulness through every season of my life.

Search my heart and show me where I have resisted Your Word. Forgive my disobedience, and help me to turn from anything that draws me away from You. Keep my heart tender, humble, and willing to receive Your correction.

Lord Jesus, strengthen me when I am weary. When I stumble, help me to confess my sin and return to You. Teach me to rely upon Your grace and to obey You in the daily choices before me.

Help me to grow in understanding, patience, love, and faithfulness. Surround me with believers who will encourage me in truth, and teach me to strengthen others also.

May my words and conduct honour You. Help me to hold fast to Your promises and continue walking faithfully with You.

In Jesus’ Almighty Name, Amen.
