“He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.”
— 1 John 4:8 (KJV)
To say “I want to love like God” is not a light or poetic statement—
It’s a dangerous, beautiful, transforming prayer.
Because God’s love is not like ours.
It’s not selective.
It’s not based on feeling.
It’s not earned.
It’s not weak.
It is holy. relentless. self-sacrificing. eternal.
So what does it really mean to want to love like God?
🔹 1. It Means Loving the Unlovable
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8
God didn’t wait for us to be worthy. He loved us while we were in rebellion.
To love like God means we don’t just love those who are easy to love—
We love the difficult.
The broken.
The ones who’ve hurt us.
That’s where real love shines.
🔹 2. It Means Forgiving Freely and Fully
God’s love doesn’t keep a record of wrongs.
He removes our sins “as far as the east is from the west” (Psalm 103:12).
To love like God is to let go of bitterness and choose mercy—even when we’re right.
It’s choosing to say:
“Because God has forgiven me, I will forgive you.”
Not just once.
Every time.
🔹 3. It Means Sacrificing for the Good of Others
“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” — John 15:13
God’s love is not selfish.
To love like Him is to give even when it costs.
-
Your time
-
Your comfort
-
Your pride
-
Even your resources
Loving like God means pouring yourself out, not for recognition, but because love gives.
🔹 4. It Means Speaking Truth With Grace
God’s love never compromises truth.
He corrects. He disciplines. He confronts sin. But He always does it in love.
To love like God is not to stay silent when someone is walking in destruction—
It’s to speak with compassion, not condemnation.
Truth without love wounds. Love without truth deceives.
But love and truth together—that’s the heart of God.
🔹 5. It Means Loving Without Limits
God doesn’t stop loving.
Even when we fail, stray, or doubt—He is faithful.
“His mercy endureth for ever.” — Psalm 136 (repeated 26 times!)
To love like God is to persevere in love.
Not based on convenience or comfort, but based on covenant.
It’s the love that keeps choosing. Keeps believing. Keeps hoping.
✨ Final Thought
To want to love like God is to ask for a new heart—
One shaped by the cross.
One stretched by grace.
One strengthened by the Spirit.
It is to die to self daily, and live for His glory.
It is to say, “Lord, not my love—but Yours through me.”
It’s not easy.
But it’s the most powerful way to live.
🙏 Prayer: Teach Me to Love Like You
Abba Father, in the name of Jesus,
I want to love the way You love.
Not in word only, but in truth.
Not in feeling, but in sacrifice.
Teach me to love the hard-to-love.
Help me forgive freely.
Make me generous in grace.
Give me boldness to speak truth in love.
Let me love without fear, without limits, without pride.
I can’t do this on my own.
So fill me with Your Spirit.
Break my heart for what breaks Yours.
Let Your love flow through me—until it looks like You.
In Jesus Almighty name, Amen.
