What are 7 things that God hates?

The Bible clearly outlines seven things that God hates in Proverbs 6:16-19 (KJV):

**"These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:

  1. A proud look,
  2. A lying tongue,
  3. Hands that shed innocent blood,
  4. An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations,
  5. Feet that be swift in running to mischief,
  6. A false witness that speaketh lies,
  7. And he that soweth discord among brethren."**

Let’s delve into each one and its significance:

1. A Proud Look

Pride is the root of many sins and separates us from God. It reflects self-exaltation and a refusal to submit to God’s authority. James 4:6 reminds us, "God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble."

2. A Lying Tongue

God values truth because He is the God of truth (John 14:6). Lies cause harm, deceive others, and go against God’s nature. Ephesians 4:25 says, "Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour."

3. Hands That Shed Innocent Blood

Murder and violence against the innocent grieve God deeply. Life is sacred, and God is the Creator of all life. Genesis 9:6 warns, "Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man."

4. A Heart That Devises Wicked Imaginations

God despises a heart that plans evil, reflecting intent to harm or manipulate others. Jeremiah 17:9 warns, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?"

5. Feet That Be Swift in Running to Mischief

This describes a readiness to rush into wrongdoing. God calls us to pursue righteousness and peace instead of chasing sin. Isaiah 59:7 highlights the destructive path of those quick to evil.

6. A False Witness That Speaketh Lies

This form of lying specifically involves deceit that damages others' reputations or causes injustice. Exodus 20:16 commands, "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour."

7. He That Soweth Discord Among Brethren

God desires unity among His people, and those who spread strife or division grieve His heart. Psalm 133:1 states, "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!"

Application

Understanding these seven things helps us examine our own hearts and actions. While God hates these sins, His grace and forgiveness are always available through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ (1 John 1:9).

Prayer

Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus, help us to walk in Your ways and turn from the things You hate. Renew our hearts and lead us to live in truth, humility, and love. Strengthen us to resist sin and sow peace wherever we go. Thank You for Your mercy and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. Amen.
