1. Human Goodness Cannot Earn Salvation
The Bible makes it clear that no one is “good enough” to earn their way into heaven because God's standard of righteousness is perfection.
“There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God.” (Romans 3:10-11)
Even the best human efforts fall short of God’s glory:
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
Good works are commendable, but they cannot erase the sin in our lives or make us right with a holy God. Salvation is not based on our deeds but on God’s grace:
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)
2. The Role of Jesus in Salvation
The Bible teaches that Jesus is the only way to God because He is the only one who has dealt with the problem of sin. His sacrificial death on the cross paid the penalty for sin and opened the way for humanity to be reconciled to God.
“God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:21)
Jesus Himself said:
“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)
This means that salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ, not through personal goodness or moral living.
3. What About Those Who Seem “Good” but Don’t Know Jesus?
From a human perspective, some people may seem “good” because they live morally upright lives. However, the Bible reveals that God judges not just outward actions but also the heart:
“The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7)
While a person might live a morally good life, they still carry the stain of sin and need forgiveness, which only Jesus can provide.
4. The Reality of Eternal Judgment
The Bible is clear that rejecting Jesus results in eternal separation from God:
“Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.” (John 3:18)
This separation, often referred to as “hell,” is not arbitrary; it is the result of a person’s decision to reject God’s offer of salvation through Jesus.
5. God’s Heart for All People
God does not desire for anyone to perish. He wants all people to come to repentance and be saved:
“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9)
This is why sharing the gospel is so important—so that more people can hear about Jesus and respond to His invitation.
6. Is This Unfair?
Some might feel that eternal separation from God for not knowing Jesus is unfair. However, the Bible teaches that God is perfectly just and will judge each person fairly based on the knowledge they had:
“For God does not show favoritism.” (Romans 2:11)
“To whom much is given, much will be required.” (Luke 12:48)
Still, the consistent message of Scripture is that salvation comes through Jesus Christ alone.
Conclusion
Even the most morally good person falls short of God’s perfect standard and needs the grace of Jesus Christ for salvation. This is why Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross is so central—it is the only way to be reconciled with God.
Rather than relying on our own goodness, we are called to place our faith in Jesus, who alone can save us and give us eternal life. This truth may be difficult, but it is an invitation into the greatest relationship possible: knowing God through His Son.
Closing Prayer
Abba Father, in the name of Jesus, thank You for Your incredible love and grace. Help us to understand the depth of our need for Jesus and to accept the gift of salvation that He offers. As it is written, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). May Your Spirit guide us into truth and draw others to the saving knowledge of Jesus. In the almighty name of Jesus, Amen.
