How to Know You Truly Know Jesus and Have Him in Your Life

Knowing Jesus and having Him in your life is the foundation of the Christian faith. But how can you be sure of this relationship? The Bible provides clear signs and evidence that you know Jesus and that He is present in your life. Here are some key ways to know:

1. You Have Confessed Your Faith in Jesus

The first step in knowing Jesus is to believe in Him as your Savior and confess Him as your Lord.
“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9)

If you’ve taken this step sincerely, you can trust that Jesus is in your life.

2. The Presence of the Holy Spirit

When you accept Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within you. The Spirit is your guide, helper, and the assurance of your salvation.
“The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.” (Romans 8:16)
You may sense the Spirit through peace, conviction of sin, a deeper understanding of Scripture, or a growing desire to live for God.

3. A New Love for God and His Word

Knowing Jesus transforms your heart, giving you a genuine love for God and a desire to know Him more through the Bible.
“We love because he first loved us.” (1 John 4:19)
“Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation.” (1 Peter 2:2)

If you find yourself drawn to God’s Word and wanting to grow in faith, it’s evidence of Jesus working in your life.

4. Obedience to Jesus’ Teachings

A genuine relationship with Jesus leads to a changed life marked by obedience to His commands.
“We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands.” (1 John 2:3)

This doesn’t mean you’ll be perfect, but there will be a desire to live in a way that pleases God.

5. A Changed Life and Growing Fruits of the Spirit

Jesus transforms your life from the inside out. The Holy Spirit produces fruits in your character, such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
“By their fruit you will recognize them.” (Matthew 7:20)

If you notice a growing love for others, forgiveness, and a deeper sense of joy, it’s evidence that Jesus is working in you.

6. A Desire to Share Jesus with Others

Knowing Jesus naturally leads to a desire to share His love and truth with others.
“Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.” (Mark 16:15)

If you find yourself wanting others to experience the same grace and love you’ve received, it’s a sign of His presence in your life.

7. Peace and Assurance in Salvation

When Jesus is in your life, you experience a deep peace and assurance of your salvation.
“I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.” (1 John 5:13)

This peace comes from trusting His promises and knowing that your future is secure in Him.

8. Conviction and Repentance

If you know Jesus, you will feel conviction when you sin, followed by a desire to turn back to Him.
“Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent.” (Revelation 3:19)

Conviction isn’t condemnation; it’s the Holy Spirit drawing you closer to Jesus.

9. Ongoing Relationship Through Prayer

Knowing Jesus is an ongoing relationship, not just a one-time event. If you find yourself talking to Him, seeking His guidance, and leaning on Him in prayer, it’s a sign that He is active in your life.
“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.” (Ephesians 6:18)

10. A Growing Hunger for Holiness

As you grow in your relationship with Jesus, you’ll desire to turn away from sin and live a life that reflects His holiness.
“But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do.” (1 Peter 1:15)

This hunger for holiness is a sign that Jesus is leading you in His ways.

What If You’re Unsure?

If you’re uncertain about your relationship with Jesus, take these steps:

  1. Pray for Assurance: Ask God to confirm His presence in your life and strengthen your faith.
  2. Reflect on Scripture: Meditate on verses about salvation and God’s promises, such as John 3:16 and Ephesians 2:8-9.
  3. Talk to Mature Believers: Seek guidance from trusted Christians or church leaders who can help you grow in your faith.

Conclusion

Knowing Jesus is about more than a feeling—it’s a relationship rooted in faith and evidenced by transformation, obedience, and peace. If you’ve trusted Him as your Savior and see these signs in your life, you can be confident that you know Him and that He is with you.

“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20)

Closing Prayer

Abba Father, in the name of Jesus, thank You for the assurance we have in knowing Your Son. Help us to grow in faith, love, and obedience, and remind us daily of Your presence in our lives. As it is written, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). May we live confidently in Your promises and glorify You in all we do. In the almighty name of Jesus, Amen.
