Three Ways God Reveals His Will: Open Visions, Trances, and Dreams

God reveals His ways and communicates His plans through various forms of visions and supernatural encounters. These visions fall into three basic categories: open visions, trances, and dreams. Each serves a unique purpose in how God interacts with His people, offering guidance, revelation, or encouragement.

Let’s explore these three types of visions from a biblical perspective.

1. Open Vision

An open vision occurs when a person is fully awake and aware, yet they see a spiritual reality as clearly as they would see the physical world around them. It is as if the veil between the physical and spiritual realms is momentarily lifted.

Biblical Example:

  • Samuel’s Vision of God:

“And the Lord appeared again in Shiloh: for the Lord revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the Lord.” - 1 Samuel 3:21 (KJV)
As a young boy, Samuel saw God and received His message while fully awake.

  • Stephen’s Vision of Heaven:

“But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God.” - Acts 7:55 (KJV)
Stephen, during his martyrdom, saw an open vision of Jesus in glory.

Key Characteristics:

  • The person is fully conscious and awake.
  • The vision is external, as if seen with physical eyes.
  • It reveals God’s presence, purposes, or heavenly realities.

Purpose:

Open visions often provide confirmation, encouragement, or a revelation of God’s power and presence to strengthen faith.

2. Trance

A trance occurs when a person is awake but temporarily in a semi-conscious state, where their physical senses are subdued, and their spirit is fully engaged with God. This is not to be confused with a loss of control; instead, it is a focused spiritual experience orchestrated by God.

Biblical Example:

  • Peter’s Vision of the Sheet:

“Peter went up upon the housetop to pray... And he became very hungry... and fell into a trance, And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him.” - Acts 10:9-11 (KJV)
Peter fell into a trance where God revealed that salvation was for both Jews and Gentiles.

  • Paul’s Vision of Jesus:

“And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance; And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem.” - Acts 22:17-18 (KJV)
Paul entered a trance during prayer and received specific guidance from the Lord.

Key Characteristics:

  • The person is semi-conscious but aware of the spiritual revelation.
  • Their physical surroundings fade, allowing them to focus entirely on the vision.
  • It often occurs during prayer or deep spiritual reflection.

Purpose:

Trances often convey specific instructions, corrections, or insights into God’s plans.

3. Dreams

A dream is a vision or message from God that occurs while a person is asleep. Throughout Scripture, God frequently uses dreams to communicate His will, warn, or provide encouragement.

Biblical Example:

  • Joseph’s Prophetic Dreams:

“And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed.” - Genesis 37:6 (KJV)
Joseph received dreams that revealed his future role in God’s plan for Israel.

  • Daniel’s Interpretation of Dreams:

“Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.” - Daniel 2:19 (KJV)
Daniel received divine insight into Nebuchadnezzar’s dream during a night vision.

  • God’s Warning to Joseph (Jesus’ Earthly Father):

“And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.” - Matthew 2:12 (KJV)
Joseph was guided through multiple dreams to protect Jesus during His early years.

Key Characteristics:

  • Dreams occur during sleep.
  • They often include vivid imagery or symbols requiring interpretation.
  • They may convey warnings, prophecies, or encouragement.

Purpose:

Dreams reveal God’s plans, give direction, or warn about impending dangers.

Understanding God’s Visionary Communication

These three types of visions—open visions, trances, and dreams—are not random but intentional methods God uses to:

  1. Reveal His Will: Offering clarity and purpose.
  2. Encourage and Strengthen Faith: Reminding believers of His presence and power.
  3. Guide and Protect: Providing specific instructions for the present or future.

Application: How to Respond to God’s Visions

  1. Be Open and Attentive: Cultivate a life of prayer and worship to be sensitive to God’s voice.

“I will stand upon my watch... and will watch to see what he will say unto me.” - Habakkuk 2:1 (KJV)

  2. Test Every Vision: Ensure it aligns with Scripture and God’s character.

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God.” - 1 John 4:1 (KJV)

  3. Seek Godly Counsel: Share significant visions with mature believers or spiritual leaders for confirmation and interpretation.

“In the multitude of counsellors there is safety.” - Proverbs 11:14 (KJV)

  4. Obey God’s Direction: Act on what God reveals, trusting His guidance and timing.

“Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only.” - James 1:22 (KJV)

Closing Thought

God continues to reveal Himself and His plans through visions—open visions, trances, and dreams. These encounters are precious and sacred opportunities to draw closer to Him, receive His guidance, and witness His glory. By staying attentive, humble, and obedient, we allow God to use these visions to fulfill His purposes in and through us.

Closing Prayer

Abba Father, in the name of Jesus, I thank You for the ways You reveal Yourself through visions, dreams, and Your Word. Open my heart and spirit to hear from You, and grant me the wisdom to discern and obey Your voice. As Your Word says, “For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not. In a dream, in a vision of the night...” (Job 33:14-15). Help me to stay faithful to Your guidance. In the almighty name of Jesus, Amen.
