Open Your Heart to Receive—Receive What? Do You Really Know?

The phrase "open your heart to receive" is often used, but it begs the question: Receive what? Understanding what God calls us to receive—and how to position ourselves to receive it—is foundational to a thriving relationship with Him. Let’s dive into what Scripture reveals about opening our hearts, what we are called to receive, and how this understanding transforms our lives.


1. Opening Your Heart: A Posture of Surrender

Opening your heart to God begins with surrender. It’s a willingness to let go of pride, self-sufficiency, and distractions to allow God’s presence, truth, and power to work in your life. Jesus invites us to this posture in Revelation 3:20:

“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”

An open heart is humble, ready to hear God’s voice and respond in faith.


2. Receive What?

a. Receive His Salvation

The first and greatest gift we receive when we open our hearts is salvation through Jesus Christ. Scripture teaches that salvation is a gift, not something we earn, but something we accept by faith.

“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12).

This reception requires repentance—a turning away from sin—and belief in the saving work of Jesus.


b. Receive His Spirit

When we open our hearts to God, we also receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, who empowers, guides, and comforts us. Jesus promised this gift to His followers:

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth” (John 14:16-17).

The Spirit dwells in our hearts, transforming us from the inside out and equipping us to live according to God’s will.


c. Receive His Peace and Rest

In a chaotic world, an open heart allows us to receive God’s peace, which surpasses understanding. Jesus said:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27).

This peace comes from trusting God fully, knowing that He is in control and that His plans are good.


d. Receive His Wisdom and Guidance

When we open our hearts, we become receptive to God’s wisdom, enabling us to navigate life’s complexities.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you” (James 1:5).

Through Scripture and the Spirit, God reveals His path for our lives, helping us make decisions that honor Him.


e. Receive His Power for Service

Opening our hearts also means receiving God’s power to serve Him and others. Paul wrote:

“I can do all this through him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13).

We are not called to live the Christian life in our own strength but to rely on His power to fulfill His purpose.


3. Barriers to Receiving

Sometimes, our hearts are closed due to fear, doubt, or past wounds. Here are common barriers and how to overcome them:

  • Pride: Acknowledge your need for God and surrender control.
  • Fear of Change: Trust that God’s plans are for your good (Jeremiah 29:11).
  • Unbelief: Pray for faith, as the man in Mark 9:24 did: “I believe; help my unbelief!”
  • Bitterness or Hurt: Let God heal your heart and remove unforgiveness.

4. How to Open Your Heart

a. Pray with Honesty

Ask God to soften your heart and make you receptive to His presence.

“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me” (Psalm 51:10).

b. Spend Time in His Word

The Bible reveals God’s promises and His will, helping you align your heart with His.

“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit” (Hebrews 4:12).

c. Worship Him

Worship shifts your focus from yourself to God, creating a space for His Spirit to work.

d. Listen and Obey

Be attentive to the Spirit’s promptings and follow where He leads. Obedience opens the door for greater blessings.


5. The Result of an Open Heart

When we open our hearts to receive, God fills us with His love, joy, and purpose. Paul’s prayer for the Ephesians reflects this truth:

“I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith” (Ephesians 3:16-17).

An open heart leads to a deeper relationship with God and equips us to share His goodness with others.


Closing Prayer

Abba Father, in the name of Jesus, we open our hearts to You today. We ask to receive all that You desire to give—Your salvation, Your Spirit, Your peace, and Your power. Remove anything that blocks us from fully trusting You. Your Word says, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled” (Matthew 5:6). Fill us, Lord, and help us live in alignment with Your will. We ask this in the almighty name of Jesus, Amen.
