As followers of Christ, it's vital to regularly assess our spiritual health to ensure we are walking in alignment with God's will. The Bible encourages self-examination as a way to grow closer to God and to remain steadfast in faith. In this blog post, we’ll explore practical ways to check yourself spiritually, grounded in Scripture.
1. Examine Your Faith
The Apostle Paul urges us to take time for self-reflection regarding our faith:
"Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!" (2 Corinthians 13:5, ESV).
Ask yourself:
- Do I truly believe in the promises of God?
- Am I living with Christ at the center of my life?
Take time in prayer to seek God’s guidance in revealing areas where your faith may need strengthening.
2. Measure Your Love for God and Others
Jesus summarized the commandments in two directives: loving God and loving others (Matthew 22:37-40). Evaluate your life by asking:
- Do I spend quality time with God in prayer and Scripture?
- Am I showing love to others, even when it’s challenging?
"If anyone says, 'I love God,' and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen." (1 John 4:20, ESV).
Loving others as God loves us is a key indicator of spiritual maturity.
3. Are You Bearing Fruit?
A spiritually healthy believer will display the fruits of the Spirit:
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law." (Galatians 5:22-23, ESV).
Evaluate whether these fruits are evident in your life. If not, pray for the Holy Spirit to work in your heart, transforming areas where you struggle.
4. Assess Your Obedience to God
Obedience is a hallmark of true discipleship. Jesus said:
"If you love me, you will keep my commandments." (John 14:15, ESV).
Reflect on these questions:
- Am I following God’s Word, even when it’s inconvenient?
- Are there sins I need to repent of?
Daily repentance and striving for holiness reflect a desire to honor God in all things.
5. Evaluate Your Time and Priorities
Where you spend your time and energy reveals your heart's focus:
"But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." (Matthew 6:33, ESV).
Check whether your priorities align with God’s. Is your relationship with Him your top priority, or has it taken a backseat to worldly pursuits?
6. Stay Accountable
We are called to live in community, sharing our burdens and sharpening one another:
"Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another." (Proverbs 27:17, ESV).
Find a trusted accountability partner or group who will lovingly point out areas of growth and encourage your walk with Christ.

Closing Prayer
Abba Father, in the name of Jesus, I thank You for Your Word that guides and strengthens us. Help us to faithfully examine our hearts and draw closer to You every day. Search us, O God, and know our hearts; test us and know our anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in us and lead us in the way everlasting (Psalm 139:23-24). May we grow in faith, bear fruit, and honor You in all we do. In the almighty name of Jesus, Amen.
