To truly know Jesus is the foundation of loving Him. Claiming to love Him without truly knowing Him can lead to an empty confession rather than a transformative relationship. Let’s explore what it means to know Jesus and how that knowledge forms the basis of genuine love for Him:
1. Knowing Jesus Goes Beyond Head Knowledge
- Knowing Jesus isn’t just about knowing facts about Him—His miracles, teachings, or even His crucifixion. It’s about a personal, intimate relationship.
- Jesus said, “Now this is eternal life: that they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent” (John 17:3).
- To know Him, we must experience His love, His presence, and His transforming power in our lives.
2. Knowing Him Through His Word
- The Bible is God’s primary way of revealing Jesus to us. To know Him, we must spend time reading, studying, and meditating on His Word.
- “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us” (John 1:14).
- If we claim to love Him, we must hunger for the truth of who He is as revealed in Scripture. His Word allows us to know His heart, His will, and His ways.
3. Knowing Him Through Obedience
- True love for Jesus is demonstrated in obedience to His commands. Jesus Himself said:
“If you love me, keep my commands” (John 14:15). - Obedience flows from a heart that knows and trusts Him. It’s impossible to obey someone you don’t truly know and respect.
4. Knowing Him Through the Holy Spirit
- The Holy Spirit, given to every believer, helps us grow in the knowledge of Jesus. He reveals Jesus to us and deepens our understanding of His love and truth.
- “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth… He will glorify Me because it is from Me that He will receive what He will make known to you” (John 16:13–14).
- If we claim to love Jesus, we must rely on the Spirit to teach us who He is.
5. Knowing Him Through Prayer and Fellowship
- Prayer is the lifeline of a relationship with Jesus. It is in the quiet place of prayer that we come to know His voice and His heart.
- “My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27).
- Regular communion with Jesus—talking to Him, listening to Him, and walking with Him—is essential to truly knowing Him.
6. Love Must Flow From Knowledge
- Loving Jesus without knowing Him is like admiring a stranger. True love for Jesus grows as we come to understand His character, His sacrifice, and His ongoing work in our lives.
- “We love because He first loved us” (1 John 4:19).
- The more we know Him—His mercy, grace, and faithfulness—the deeper our love becomes.
7. Evidence of Knowing Him
- The evidence of knowing and loving Jesus is reflected in a transformed life. It shows in:
- Faithful obedience: “Whoever claims to live in Him must live as Jesus did” (1 John 2:6).
- Bearing fruit: “This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples” (John 15:8).
- Loving others: “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love” (1 John 4:8).
Do You Know Him if You Claim to Love Him?
To claim to love Jesus without truly knowing Him is a shallow confession. True love for Jesus begins with knowing Him personally—His sacrifice, His grace, His commands—and allowing that knowledge to transform your heart and life.
A Personal Reflection
- Do I spend time in God’s Word to know Him better?
- Do I obey His commands out of love for Him?
- Is my life bearing fruit that shows I truly know and love Him?
Closing Prayer
Abba Father, in the name of Jesus, I desire to truly know You—not just with my mind, but with my heart. Reveal Yourself to me through Your Word, through the Holy Spirit, and through every moment of my life. Forgive me if I have claimed to love You without truly seeking to know You. Help me to grow in my relationship with You so that my love is genuine and my life reflects Your glory. As Your Word says in Philippians 3:10, I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of His resurrection and participation in His sufferings. In the almighty name of Jesus, Amen.
