To behave as one chosen or "elect" in the biblical sense means to live in alignment with God's Word, reflecting His character, and fulfilling the purposes He has called us to. This calling demands humility, gratitude, and a commitment to live a life of holiness, as God works through us for His glory.
Here are some key principles and Scripture references that reflect what it means to live as one of God's elect:
1. Walk in Holiness and Love
Being chosen by God is not a matter of pride but of responsibility. The elect are called to live holy lives that reflect God's nature and to show love to others.
Colossians 3:12: "Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience."
1 Peter 2:9: "But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light."
2. Remain Humble and Grateful
The elect understand that their salvation is a gift from God, not something they earned. This truth keeps them humble and dependent on His grace.
Ephesians 2:8-9: "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast."
Romans 11:5-6: "So too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace. And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace."
3. Bear Fruit and Persevere
The evidence of being God's elect is shown in the fruit of the Spirit and in perseverance through trials. God's chosen people bear fruit to glorify Him and persevere in their faith until the end.
John 15:16: "You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you."
Matthew 24:13: "But the one who stands firm to the end will be saved."
4. Seek God’s Will and Trust His Sovereignty
The elect submit their lives to God's will, trusting in His sovereign plan, even when circumstances are difficult.
Romans 8:28-30: "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son..."
Isaiah 41:10: "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
5. Proclaim the Gospel
As the elect, we are entrusted with the mission of sharing the good news of Jesus Christ so others may also come to know Him and be saved.
2 Timothy 1:9: "He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time."
Matthew 28:19-20: "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you."
Closing Prayer:
Abba Father, in the name of Jesus, thank You for choosing us to be Your people. Help us to live holy and blameless lives that reflect Your love and grace to a broken world. Teach us to walk in humility, bear fruit for Your Kingdom, and persevere through trials with unwavering faith. As it says in Colossians 3:12, may we clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Empower us to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ boldly. We ask this in the almighty name of Jesus. Amen.
