The Bible contains a total of 613 laws or commandments known as the mitzvot in the Hebrew Bible (or Torah). These laws are primarily found in the first five books of the Old Testament, also called the Pentateuch, which includes Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.
The 613 mitzvot are traditionally divided into two main categories:
- Positive commandments – Things that one should do (248 of them, corresponding to the number of bones in the human body).
- Negative commandments – Things that one should not do (365 of them, corresponding to the number of days in the year).
These laws cover various aspects of life, including moral conduct, religious duties, civil laws, ceremonial rituals, dietary regulations, and more.
In the New Testament, Jesus emphasized that the heart of the law is love for God and neighbor, summarizing the spirit of the law with His two greatest commandments, but the original 613 commandments remain foundational in Jewish law and tradition.
